Government soil mapping shows most of Westbrook on black cracking clay (Vertosol) formed on basalt: moderately deep self-mulching clay in the centre, deep brownish-black clay to the south and east, and reddish-brown cracking clay toward Glenvale in the north-east. Parts of the west carry very shallow, stony loam. The clay holds plenty of water but takes it in slowly, pooling in the wet and cracking hard in the dry, so core aeration is the most valuable treatment, with gypsum on compacted patches; the shallow, stony ground dries out first and wants the taller recommended cut and deep, less frequent watering. Couch, Queensland blue couch, kikuyu and buffalo all grow well here and need regular mowing in the growing season, then slow down with frost over winter.

Westbrook is a rural town and locality about 10.5 km south-west of the Toowoomba CBD that has grown into a satellite suburb of the city, covering about 61 km². Its population rose from 3,885 in 2016 to 4,408 in 2021, almost all in separate houses. The Gore Highway passes through, the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing runs across its western part, and Bunker's Hill State School has been open since 1899. The name goes back to the Westbrook pastoral run, named in 1841.
