Gatton

Gatton sits on the major-stream flood plain and levee soils of Lockyer Creek — dark, moderately structured Dermosols in the loam to light medium clay range, typically only 0.3 to 0.7m thick over buried soil layers or bedload of gravel, cobble and sand. The survey notes exactly what you see in a Gatton yard: on drying, the surface forms a thin hard crust. That crust is why aeration earns its place here, letting water and air through instead of running off, and these soils reward consistent watering. They're fertile and hold moisture well, around 118 to 147mm in the top metre. Self-mulching black earth (Vertosol) takes over on the wider plains. It's warmer than the plateau. Couch, QLD blue couch, kikuyu and buffalo all grow well.

The climate difference is dramatic: January days average 31.7°C, about four degrees hotter than Toowoomba, on the driest ground in South East Queensland — while clear winter nights still pool cold air across the flats and deliver proper frosts. The black alluvial soil is superbly fertile, so lawns grow hard and fast through a long hot season; the challenge isn't getting growth, it's keeping water up to it and mowing often enough to stay ahead.
