Government soil mapping shows much of Gatton, including the town centre, on hard-setting soils (Sodosols) formed on Gatton Sandstone, with dark clay loam to light clay alluvial soil (the Lockyer series, a Dermosol) on the Lockyer Creek flats and self-mulching cracking clay on recent alluvium in the south-west. Both the sandstone soils and the creek-flat loams set hard at the surface when dry, so water sits or runs off, which is why core aeration earns its place here; gypsum helps on the sodic sandstone soils. UQ Gatton, the nearest weather station, averages 31.7°C in January, about four degrees warmer than the long-term Toowoomba station, and 765 mm of rain a year against Toowoomba's 952 mm. Winter still bites: the station averages about seven nights a year at 2°C or below, mostly in July. Couch, kikuyu and buffalo all grow here, and warm-season grasses go dormant in the cold.
Gatton is a Lockyer Valley town about 45 km east of the Toowoomba CBD in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council area, bordering Grantham and Placid Hills to the west and rural localities including Lawes, Adare and Ringwood. The valley is nicknamed Australia's Salad Bowl, is rated among the top ten most fertile farming areas in the world, and its farmers grow around 40% of the fresh vegetables eaten in South East Queensland. The Queensland Agricultural College opened at Gatton in 1897, on the site now occupied by UQ's Gatton campus at Lawes. At the 2021 census Gatton had 7,851 people in 3,120 private dwellings, from town lots through to larger rural-residential blocks.
