Government soil mapping shows Oakey town and the country to its north and west on hardsetting texture-contrast soils (Sodosols): a loamy surface over red-brown or darker clay subsoil on old alluvial plains, with red clay soils on basalt (Ferrosols) to the east and south. Oakey is a rural town about 28 km north-west of the Toowoomba CBD, at about 406 m elevation, with Oakey Creek, a tributary of the Condamine River, running through it. The Western railway line came through in 1867 and the town was surveyed in 1868; today the Warrego Highway bypasses the town. The Oakey Army Aviation Centre (Swartz Barracks), about 3 km from the town centre, runs Army aviation training, and the Australian Army Flying Museum is on the base. The 2021 Census counted 4,756 residents, with most homes separate houses.
