Government soil mapping shows Vale View's north and centre on very shallow, stony red-brown loam over basalt, with shallow dark clay to the west and black cracking clay to the south and east. Shallow, stony soil dries out fast and browns off first in a dry spell, so the taller recommended cut and deep, less frequent watering help; the black clay instead compacts and cracks, and wants aeration. It's also drier and colder than the city: Cambooya, the nearest weather station, averages about 720 mm of rain a year against Toowoomba's 950 mm, with colder winter nights. Couch and kikuyu are the usual lawn grasses.
Vale View is about 15 km south-south-west of the Toowoomba CBD, bordering Wyreema, Finnie, Mount Rascal, Hodgson Vale and Cambooya, with the New England Highway along its south-east side and Drayton Connection Road running through it. The rural-residential homes sit in the north on the southern slope of Mount Shepperd; the rest is cropping and grazing country. Vale View State School has been here since 1931. Council has funded a $1 million main to move about 100 homes around Stark Drive, Graham Drive, Timothy Drive and Smith Creek Road off an unreliable bore and onto its bulk water supply.
