Government soil mapping shows much of Hodgson Vale on black cracking clay over basalt, very deep in the centre and moderately deep to the west and south-west, with very shallow, stony red-brown loam in the east and south-east. The black clay holds water, then shrinks and cracks as it dries and compacts under traffic; core aeration and gypsum help, and wetting agents do little on it. The stony ground dries out fast and browns off first, so the taller recommended cut and deep, less frequent watering help. Hodgson Vale lies roughly midway between two long-term weather records: Toowoomba (closed 2007) averaged about 950 mm of rain a year, and Cambooya about 720 mm with July nights averaging 2 °C. Couch and kikuyu are the usual grasses, and both go frost-dormant in winter.
Hodgson Vale is a rural locality about 12 km south of the Toowoomba CBD, covering 25.8 km² between Top Camp, Mount Rascal, Preston, Vale View, Cambooya and Ramsay. The New England Highway runs through it, and Hodgson Creek rises near Top Camp and flows south-west through the locality to join the Condamine River. The name is believed to honour Arthur Hodgson, who took up the Eton Vale run in 1840, and the old Hodgsons Vale school on Hodgson Vale Road ran from 1906 to 1960. At the 2021 Census it had 1,444 residents and 485 dwellings, almost all separate houses.
