Shallow stony loam on basalt
Government soil mapping shows Preston on very shallow, stony red-brown loam to clay loam over basalt. Shallow soil holds little water, so lawns here brown off quickly in a dry spell, and the taller recommended cut with deep, less frequent watering helps far more than daily sprinkling. Stones and rock near the surface are hard on mower blades and lawns, so cutting height matters. Couch, kikuyu and Queensland blue couch are the usual lawn grasses, and khaki weed is worth watching on thin, dry ground in summer.
Preston is a rural locality about 12 km south-south-east of the Toowoomba CBD, running out to the edge of the range escarpment, where Preston Peak Wines looks over the Lockyer Valley and Table Top Mountain. It straddles the Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley council boundary and borders Middle Ridge, Kearneys Spring, Top Camp, Hodgson Vale, Upper Flagstone, Rockmount and Ramsay. About 640 people lived here at the 2021 Census, almost all in separate houses.
