The part that matters
It's the single most common mistake, and it's why so many Toowoomba hedges are green on top and bare underneath.
Cut a hedge with vertical or inward-sloping sides and the top shades the bottom. The lower foliage gets no light, thins out, and eventually dies back to bare stems — and once it's gone, most species won't reshoot from old wood. You're then looking at replacement rather than recovery.
Trimmed with a slight batter — wider at the base, tapering toward the top — light reaches the whole face and the hedge stays dense from ground to crown. It's a small difference in technique that determines whether a hedge lasts five years or twenty.

What we do
Timing
Growth restarts. First maintenance trim once the frost risk has passed — later up the range at Highfields and Hampton than down in the city.
Peak growth, peak trimming. Formal hedges may want two cuts across the season. Avoid hard cutback in extreme heat.
Final shaping trim before growth slows. Leaves the hedge tidy through winter when it won't grow out again.
The window for hard cutback and structural work on deciduous and dormant species, plus rose pruning. Avoid heavy cutback on frost-tender plants at elevation.
Ongoing or one-off
One-off — an overgrown cutback, a pre-sale tidy-up, or getting on top of a hedge that's got away from you. Ongoing — scheduled trims through the year as part of regular garden maintenance, so it never gets out of hand again. Our system prompts hedge work at the right time of year rather than leaving it to memory.
Diagnosis
Light, regular trims beat one heavy annual cut. A hedge trimmed two or three times a year keeps its density and shape. One hacked back hard once a year tends to go woody, thin out at the base, and take far longer to recover.
Why the gear matters
Hedge work done with blunt or undersized gear leaves torn, ragged foliage that browns off at the cut and takes weeks to look right. It's the most common reason a freshly trimmed hedge looks worse before it looks better.
We run Stihl KombiSystem and Ego powerheads with proper hedge trimmer and pole pruner attachments, so the cut is clean and the hedge recovers quickly with sharp, defined lines. A Stihl SH 86 shredder vac and blower finishes the job — clippings cleared off paths, driveways, garden beds and lawn, not left for you to sweep.
Hedge trimming generates a surprising volume of waste, and a pile of clippings on the lawn defeats the point of the tidy-up. Every job includes full green waste removal — we load it, take it and dispose of it. If you'd rather keep some for mulching or composting, tell us and we'll leave what you want.
Common questions
Formal hedges usually two to four times a year to stay crisp. Informal screening hedges once or twice. Fast growers like murraya and photinia need more than slower species like buxus. We'll recommend a rhythm based on what you've actually got.
Sometimes. It depends on the species and how long it's been bare. Plants that reshoot from old wood can recover with staged cutback and correct shaping. Many conifers won't reshoot from bare stems at all. We'll tell you honestly which situation you're in rather than charging for work that won't succeed.
Yes. Significant reductions are often staged across two seasons — taking too much at once can shock or kill the plant. We're Working at Heights certified for anything that needs elevation.
Yes, always. Hedge work generates real volume and it all leaves with us, with hard surfaces blown down afterwards. Larger cutbacks include as many dump runs as the job needs.
Yes — clearance pruning, deadwooding, shaping and canopy lifting, plus small tree removal up to 5 metres in height. Anything taller than that, or work needing an arborist's structural assessment, we'll refer you on rather than take it.
Yes, and it's cheaper that way — we're already on site. Most clients with both have them done together, with the hedge on a less frequent cycle than the mow.
Usually yes. Hard cutbacks are best done in the warmer months so the plant has the growing season ahead to recover and put on new foliage. We'll assess it and give you an honest view of what's achievable and how long recovery will take — including telling you if it's better left a few weeks.
