Pruning, lopping & removal
Branches cut back off roofs and fences, deadwood taken out, canopies lifted, and small trees up to 5 metres removed. Working at Heights certified, $20M insured, and every branch cleaned up and taken away.
The part that matters
Most of the tree damage we see around Toowoomba isn't from storms. It's from bad pruning: branches chopped off halfway along, stubs left sticking out, or a whole canopy topped flat.
Cut a branch in the middle and the tree answers with a bundle of fast, weakly attached shoots around the wound. Within a couple of seasons it's denser and messier than before, and the stub often rots back into the main stem.
Cut just outside the branch collar, the slightly swollen ring where a branch joins the trunk, and the tree seals the wound over on its own. Thin the canopy rather than shortening everything and you get the light and clearance you wanted without a flush of regrowth.
We prune to the collar, not to a height.
What we do
Timing
Growth restarts. Good for light shaping and clearance once the frosts are done, later up the range at Highfields and Hampton than in the city. Leave spring-flowering trees until they've finished flowering.
Storm season. The time to get deadwood and branches over the roof sorted before a storm does it for you. Avoid heavy pruning in a heatwave, when freshly exposed bark can scorch.
A good time for clearance work and general tidy-ups as growth slows. Cuts stay neat right through winter.
The best window for structural pruning on deciduous trees: with the leaves off you can see every branch. Also the time for crepe myrtles and roses.
Ongoing or one-off
One-off: a dead tree out, branches off the roof before storm season, or a backyard opened back up to the light. Ongoing: tree and shrub pruning on a schedule as part of regular garden maintenance, so nothing gets big enough to become a problem.
Diagnosis
Small, regular pruning beats one big hack. Taking a little out every year or two keeps a tree's shape and strength. Lopping a tree hard all at once usually triggers a flush of weak regrowth that's back in your gutters within a couple of seasons.
Why the gear matters
A branch ripped off with blunt gear, or one that tears a strip of bark down the trunk because it wasn't undercut, leaves a wound the tree can't seal properly. That's where rot and borers get in, and why a badly pruned tree often looks worse a year later.
We run Stihl KombiSystem and Ego powerheads with pole pruner attachments, kept sharp, and heavier limbs are undercut first so the bark doesn't tear when they drop. Bigger branches come down in short, controlled sections rather than in one piece onto your fence.
Tree work creates far more waste than most people expect. Every job includes green waste removal: branches, leaves and offcuts loaded and taken away, and a Stihl SH 86 shredder vac and blower to clear paths, lawns and beds. If you'd like to keep the logs or the leaf litter for mulch, tell us and we'll leave it.
Common questions
Up to about 5 metres tall. We take it down in sections and clear it away. Anything taller, or a tree that needs climbing, rigging or a structural assessment, is a job for a qualified arborist, and we'll tell you that upfront rather than attempt it.
For most trees on private residential land in the Toowoomba region, no. Toowoomba Regional Council says its approval isn't needed to remove vegetation on private land unless it's part of a development application. Different rules apply to heritage-listed properties and some protected native plants, and street trees belong to council and must not be pruned or removed. Lockyer Valley properties, including Gatton, fall under that council's own rules. If you're unsure, check with council or request a free Queensland Government vegetation map before we start.
Usually, yes, back to your boundary line. Queensland law lets you trim branches that overhang your property back to the boundary, as long as the tree isn't covered by a council protection order. A quick chat with your neighbour first saves a lot of grief. For low branches, there's also a formal notice process that can ask the tree's owner to contribute to the cost.
Yes, always. Branches, logs and leaves leave with us and hard surfaces are blown down afterwards. Bigger removals include as many dump runs as the job needs. If you want to keep firewood or mulch, just say so.
Clearance pruning and deadwood removal can be done any time of year. Structural pruning of deciduous trees is best in winter while they're dormant, and spring-flowering trees are best pruned just after they finish flowering. We avoid heavy pruning during summer heatwaves.
Topping a tree flat usually is. It triggers dense, weakly attached regrowth that's back within a season or two and more likely to snap in a storm. We reduce size by cutting back to a suitable side branch or to the collar instead, which keeps the tree's natural shape and strength.
Yes, and it's cheaper that way because we're already on site. Plenty of clients have a tree pruned or a small tree removed on their regular mowing or hedging day.

Why us for this work
Working at Heights certified, so pruning off the ground is done properly, not from the top rung of a ladder.
$20 million public liability, which matters when the branch is over your roof or the neighbour's fence.
Clean collar cuts with sharp Stihl and Ego gear, so trees seal over instead of rotting back.
All green waste removed — nothing left behind for you to deal with.
Straight answers on size: if a tree is over 5 metres or needs an arborist, we'll tell you rather than attempt it.

In their words
★★★★★
The Team from TopLawn have been mowing and maintaining our one acre property at Hodgson Vale on a regular monthly basis since the beginning of this year. Prior to that they had cut back and trimmed our very overgrown hedges and Bougainvillea, making them look attractive once again. The boys have done an amazing job, especially Zac and Tom who leave our yard looking pristine and very well cared for - lawn mowed, edges trimmed, and paths blown clean. We highly recommend this family business for their high standards and professional service.

Immediately impressed by their skill and careful attention to detail. I have a very small garden area but with many fiddly and small feature hedges, plus some really tall screening hedges. The result is always perfect. His team is efficient, leaving everything clean and looking beautiful.
