Black cracking clay (Vertosol) on basalt
Government soil mapping shows mostly black cracking clay on basalt across Top Camp, with some shallow red-brown soil. Black clay holds water well but compacts, cracks wide in a dry summer and turns boggy after heavy rain, so core aeration and gypsum help far more than wetting agents. Holding the taller recommended cut shades the soil and slows cracking. Couch, kikuyu and buffalo are the usual lawn grasses.
Top Camp is a rural-residential locality about 8.5 km south of the Toowoomba CBD, sitting at 580 to 630 m just west of the Great Dividing Range, with the New England Highway crossing its eastern side. It borders Darling Heights, Kearneys Spring, Mount Rascal, Preston and Hodgson Vale, and Hodgson Creek rises here. Most of it is rural-residential land, where Council's minimum lot sizes run from 4,000 m² to 2 ha, so homes sit on large blocks. About 900 people lived here at the 2021 Census.
