Black cracking clay (Vertosol) on basalt
Government soil mapping shows Cambooya and the country around it on black cracking clay (Vertosol) formed on basalt: very deep, self-mulching black heavy clay around the town, moderately deep black clay to the west, and deep dark clays to the east and south. This clay holds plenty of water but takes it in slowly, going sticky in the wet and cracking hard in the dry, so core aeration is the fix, with gypsum on compacted patches; wetting agents do little on clay this heavy. It's drier and frostier than the city: the Cambooya Post Office station averages about 721 mm of rain a year against Toowoomba's 952 mm, and recorded around 54 nights a year at or below 2°C. Couch, Queensland blue couch and kikuyu are the usual grasses, with winter grass and bindii the cool-season weeds and frost dormancy through winter.
Cambooya is a rural town about 21 km south of the Toowoomba CBD, at about 465 m elevation. European settlement began in 1840 with Arthur Hodgson's Eton Vale run; the township was surveyed and named in 1843, and the railway station was built in 1868 as the Southern line pushed on to Warwick. Outside town the land is a mix of dry and irrigated cropping and grazing. Cambooya is growing fast, from 1,584 residents in 2016 to 2,260 in 2021, with most homes separate houses.
