Reset & rebuild

Garden Overhauls & Rock Bed Installation

Overgrown gardens brought back to a defined shape, and rock or mulch beds installed properly — with the right underlay underneath, which is why ours stay clean and most don't.

The bit nobody sees

The underlay is why most beds fail within a year

Rock and mulch beds don't fail because of the rock or the mulch. They fail because of what went underneath — or what didn't.

Under a full rock bed we use heavy-duty plastic. Nothing is meant to grow there, so a complete barrier is exactly right. Weeds can't push through and nothing establishes from below.

Under a planted bed we use woven weed matting. Your plants need water and air reaching their roots — plastic would slowly kill them. Woven matting blocks weeds while letting the bed breathe.

Using plastic under plantings, or nothing at all under rock, is the single most common reason a bed that looked immaculate in March is full of weeds by November. It's invisible on the day and obvious a year later.

We also take the time to clear and kill off what's already there before laying anything. Covering live couch runners and hoping is not a method.

What an overhaul involves

From overgrown to defined

Clear and assessEverything overgrown comes out first. It's often only then you can see what's actually worth keeping — and there's usually more than people expect.
Heavy cutbackEstablished shrubs and trees reduced to a shape they can grow back into, rather than removed outright where they're worth saving.
Weed removal & treatmentRoots out where possible, knockdown treatment where it isn't. Getting this right before rebuilding is what makes the result last.
Bed reshaping & edgingBeds given clean, deliberate lines again. A defined edge is what makes a garden read as designed rather than overgrown.
Underlay & surfaceCorrect membrane for the bed type, then rock or mulch laid to depth. This is where the job is won or lost.
Everything removedAll green waste and rubbish taken away, with as many dump runs as the job needs. Hard surfaces blown down.

Why one contractor

One booking, one crew, no coordinating

A full overhaul uses our whole fleet in a single job — Toro and Bushranger mowers to reset the lawn, Stihl KombiSystem and Ego tools for heavy hedge and shrub cutback, and dump runs to clear everything away afterwards.

That matters more than it sounds. The alternative is coordinating a mowing contractor, a hedging contractor and a rubbish removal service around each other's schedules — and being the one who has to chase all three when one doesn't turn up.

We also handle dirt and soil removal where an overhaul involves regrading a bed, taking out old fill, or clearing built-up material against a fence or wall.

Choosing

Rock or mulch?

Rock lasts effectively forever, never needs topping up, and suits low-maintenance areas, driveway edges, side accesses and anywhere you want zero ongoing work. The trade-off is heat — rock radiates it, so it's harsh next to plants that don't like hot feet, and it's a job to remove if you change your mind.

Mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down, holds moisture, and moderates temperature — which matters on Toowoomba's free-draining red soil. It suits planted beds. The trade-off is that it decomposes and needs topping up, usually annually.

Most properties end up with both: rock where nothing needs to grow, mulch where things do. We'll tell you which suits which part of your garden rather than selling you whichever we've got on the trailer.

Common questions

Garden overhaul FAQ

What goes under a rock bed?

Heavy-duty plastic. Nothing is meant to grow in a full rock bed, so a complete barrier is correct. Weed matting under rock lets weeds through eventually — it's designed to breathe, which is exactly what you don't want there.

What goes under a planted bed?

Woven weed matting. Your plants need water and air reaching their roots. Plastic under plantings slowly suffocates them — it's the most common mistake we're called in to fix.

My garden is completely overgrown — is it salvageable?

Almost always, and usually with more of the original planting intact than people expect. We clear first, then assess. Established shrubs and trees can often be cut back hard and grown into shape rather than removed.

When's the best time for an overhaul?

Autumn and early spring are ideal — mild enough that cutback plants recover well, and ahead of the growing season so the result establishes. Summer overhauls are doable but heavy cutback in extreme heat stresses plants.

How long does an overhaul take?

Most residential overhauls are one to three days depending on size and how far things have gone. We'll give you a realistic timeframe with the quote rather than an optimistic one.

What happens after the overhaul?

Most clients move onto regular garden maintenance to hold the result. An overhaul resets a garden; maintenance is what stops it going backwards. Without it you'll be back where you started in two or three seasons.
