Government soil mapping shows Upper Lockyer on hard-setting soils formed on sandstone and conglomerate: Sodosols on the Gatton Sandstone and Winwill Conglomerate, a Kandosol on the MaMa Creek Sandstone in the west, and stony duplex soils on the hills in the east, with no basalt soils at any of the points checked. These soils seal over and set hard when dry, so rain runs off before it soaks in, and the stony hill soils dry out fastest. Core aeration and gypsum on the sodic soils open them up, and the taller recommended cut with deep, less frequent watering helps the grass through dry spells. Couch and kikuyu are the usual lawn grasses, dormant through the colder months.
Upper Lockyer is a rural locality about 20 km north-east of the Toowoomba CBD in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council area, sharing the 4352 postcode with Highfields. It borders Murphys Creek, Helidon, White Mountain and Lockyer. Lockyer Upper State School (also known as Upper Lockyer State School) operated here from 1939 to 1968, and 542 people lived in the locality at the 2021 census.
