Government soil mapping shows most of Placid Hills on hard-setting, mottled yellow duplex soils on gently rolling rises, with dark self-mulching cracking clay (the Lawes series, a Vertosol) on the Lockyer Creek flats in the east. The duplex soils have a lighter surface over a denser clay subsoil and set hard when dry, so water runs off before it soaks in; core aeration and gypsum help, and the taller recommended cut stops them browning off in dry spells. The creek-flat cracking clay holds water well but compacts and cracks, and wants aeration rather than wetting agents. UQ Gatton, the nearest weather station, averages 31.7°C in January and about seven nights a year at 2°C or below, mostly in July. Couch and kikuyu are the usual lawn grasses, dormant through the cold months.

Placid Hills is a rural locality about 32 km east of the Toowoomba CBD in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council area, between Grantham to the west and Gatton to the east, with Lower Tenthill to the south. Lockyer Creek forms much of its eastern boundary and the Western railway line its northern and north-western boundaries, while the Gatton Clifton Road passes to the south. The north of the locality is mostly rural-residential and the south is grazing and cropping country. The locality was officially named and bounded in 2000, and 796 people lived here at the 2021 census.
