Government soil mapping shows hardsetting texture-contrast soil on the creek alluvium around the town, and sandstone-derived soils on the slopes. Both can set hard and shed water when dry, so aeration and a wetting agent help water get in, and the taller recommended cut helps through summer. Being so much lower than Toowoomba, summer days run hotter (Gatton, further down the valley, averages a 27°C maximum against Toowoomba's 22.6°C), so lawns can grow away quickly after summer storms. Parts of the town sit inside the Lockyer Creek floodplain overlay. Couch, kikuyu and Queensland blue couch are the usual lawn grasses.
Murphys Creek is a rural town at the foot of the Great Dividing Range, about 15 km north-east of the Toowoomba CBD in the Lockyer Valley council area. It grew around the 1867 railway station where steam trains took on water before climbing the range, and Murphy's Creek State School has run since 1870. The town sits at around 250 m, some 440 m lower than Toowoomba, and Murphy's Creek runs through it into Lockyer Creek. About 630 people lived here at the 2021 Census.
