Government soil mapping shows the old town and the flats to its west on brown and red self-mulching cracking clay (Vertosol) on the terraced valley plains, with lighter sandy loam to clay loam over gravelly alluvium in the middle of the locality, dark clay loam alluvium (Dermosol) to the south-east, and hard-setting, stony duplex soils on the hills to the north. The cracking clay holds water well but compacts and cracks open in dry spells, so aeration and gypsum help and wetting agents don't do much; the lighter, gravelly soils dry out faster and want the taller recommended cut. UQ Gatton, the nearest weather station, averages 31.7°C in January and about seven nights a year at 2°C or below, mostly in July. Couch and kikuyu grow hard through the long warm season and go dormant in the cold.

Grantham sits about 29 km east of the Toowoomba CBD in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council area, between Helidon and Gatton, with the Warrego Highway running east to west through it and part of the Lockyer State Forest in its north-west corner.
