Hardsetting sandstone soils (Kandosol, Sodosol, Chromosol)
Government soil mapping shows Postmans Ridge on hard-setting soils formed on sandstone and conglomerate: Kandosols on the MaMa Creek Sandstone through the centre and west, Sodosols on the Winwill Conglomerate and Gatton Sandstone in the east, and a texture-contrast Chromosol with some rock outcrop on the Heifer Creek Sandstone in the north-west. None of the points checked showed basalt soil. These soils set hard when dry and are slow to take in water, so core aeration helps rain and fertiliser get in, gypsum helps on the sodic soils, and the taller recommended cut with deep, less frequent watering keeps the grass going through dry spells. Couch and kikuyu are the usual lawn grasses, dormant through the colder months.
Postmans Ridge is a rural locality about 14 km east of the Toowoomba CBD in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council area, between Withcott to the south-west and Helidon Spa to the east. The Warrego Highway and the Toowoomba Connection Road both run through it, Rocky Creek forms part of its south-western boundary, and Wards Hill in the north-west rises to 424 m. Land use is mainly grazing and rural-residential housing, with some cropping. The locality is named after a mailman murdered in the early coaching days, and Postman's Ridge State School ran from 1878 to 1937.
