Sandstone duplex soils (Chromosol) · cracking clay and hard-setting loams on the flats
Government soil mapping shows most of Withcott on texture-contrast soils (Chromosols) formed on Heifer Creek Sandstone, with some rock outcrop, while the more detailed valley survey shows a mix on the flats through town: dark self-mulching cracking clay (the Blenheim series, a Vertosol), hard-setting sandy clay loam over a red-brown subsoil (Sutton, a Chromosol) and hard-setting sandy loam over a sodic subsoil (Hattonvale, a Sodosol). The sandstone soils and the Sutton and Hattonvale soils set hard and shed water when dry, so core aeration helps water and fertiliser get in and the taller recommended cut helps in dry spells. The cracking clay holds water but compacts and cracks, and wants aeration and gypsum rather than wetting agents. Couch, kikuyu and buffalo all grow here and go dormant through the colder months.
Withcott sits about 9 km east of the Toowoomba CBD in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council area, at the foot of the Toowoomba Range on the Toowoomba Connection Road. It borders Postmans Ridge, Murphys Creek and Ballard, and the Toowoomba suburbs of Mount Lofty, Prince Henry Heights and Rangeville at the top of the range. Withcott State School first opened in 1912 on the Toowoomba Commonage, and the town was hit by a flash flood on 10 January 2011. At the 2021 census Withcott had 2,067 people in 723 private dwellings, almost all of them separate houses.
