Mount Lofty sits on the free-draining red Ferrosol, and its elevation brings cooler conditions and some frost through winter. The free-draining soil dries at the surface in summer heat, so wetting agents help on stubborn dry patches. Kikuyu does well here and holds its colour into the cool, buffalo suits the shadier terraced sections, and couch and fescue appear on open and shaded blocks respectively.
