Government soil mapping shows most of Mount Lofty on basalt with red Ferrosols, with lateritised basalt carrying a red Kandosol on the western side and Heifer Creek Sandstone, a texture-contrast Chromosol, on the north-eastern side toward Jubilee Park. The red basalt soils drain freely and dry at the surface in summer heat, so a wetting agent helps on stubborn dry patches, and the Kandosol holds fewer nutrients, so feed a little more often there. Where a lawn sits on the sandstone side, expect a harder-setting surface over clay that sheds water, so aerate before reaching for a wetting agent. Kikuyu and couch suit open, sunny lawns and buffalo the shadier sections; couch and kikuyu slow and colour off after winter frosts. Winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds.
Mount Lofty is a residential suburb on the north-eastern edge of Toowoomba's urban area, about 3.3 km from the CBD, with East Toowoomba to the south and Harlaxton to the west. Once known as Tick Hill, it's named for the peak at the eastern end of North Street, where there's a lookout, garden and rainforest planting beside the WIN Television tower. Jubilee Park's bushland and riding trails make up the suburb's eastern part, and Toowoomba State High School has been here since 1919. Boyce Gardens on Range Street is the suburb's one heritage-listed place.
