Rangeville

Rangeville sits on the deep red Ferrosol — free-draining, fertile, and the reason the gardens here thrive. On the slopes, though, that free drainage works against you: sun-exposed sloped sections dry out fastest and are the first to go water-repellent, so wetting agents and aeration really earn their place on Rangeville blocks. Couch and kikuyu handle the open lawns, with buffalo and fescue on the shadier, cooler, treed sections. Winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds, and the established beds need ongoing weeding and pruning.

Near the escarpment edge the red soil runs shallower and stonier than the deep profiles further into the plateau, and the big established trees on older blocks mean plenty of lawns fight shade and root competition. Both change the advice: higher mowing, more regular feeding, and aeration where roots have compacted the ground.

Rangeville is one of Toowoomba's most desirable established suburbs — hilly, green, and full of character homes with mature gardens on generous blocks. The terrain and the established plantings mean it's rarely just a mow here; garden beds, hedges and slope-work are all part of keeping these properties looking their best.

Rangeville runs to the very rim of the escarpment, taking in the 65-hectare Picnic Point parklands and the lookout over Tabletop Mountain and the Lockyer Valley below. Most of the suburb went in after the war, with building continuing to the late 1990s, so gardens here are properly established.

On a sloped Rangeville block, the classic sign is a dry, hard patch on the sunny side that won't take water — that's hydrophobic soil, and a wetting agent plus aeration fixes it. Spongy turf is thatch (scarify), pale growth is hunger (feed), and clover spreading is the low-nitrogen signal. In the gardens, overgrown or misshapen hedges and crowded beds are your cue for pruning and an overhaul.
