Government soil mapping shows Rangeville on basalt-derived red soils: the centre is mapped as lateritised basalt and the higher ground to the east and south as basalt, both with red Ferrosols, while the north-western side carries a red Kandosol on lateritised basalt. Both drain freely, and on slopes that works against you: sun-exposed sloped sections dry out fastest and are the first to turn water-repellent, so a wetting agent and aeration earn their place. The Kandosol holds fewer nutrients, so feed a little more often there. Couch and kikuyu handle the open lawns, with buffalo and fescue on shadier, treed sections, and big established trees mean plenty of lawns fight shade and root competition: the taller recommended cut, regular feeding and aeration where roots have packed the ground all help. Couch and kikuyu colour off after winter frosts, and winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds.
Rangeville is about 5 km south-east of the Toowoomba CBD. Its eastern boundary runs along the top of the Great Dividing Range, and East Creek forms its western boundary, home to the Toowoomba Bicentennial Waterbird Habitat. Picnic Point, a heritage-listed reserve of about 65 hectares on Tourist Road, has lookouts with direct views to Tabletop Mountain and out over the Lockyer Valley. Rangeville State School opened in 1909 and St Joseph's College in 1956, and the suburb's established homes come with mature gardens to match.
