Government soil mapping shows two kinds of ground in Ballard. Most of the slope is sandstone country with texture-contrast soil, a lighter, sandier topsoil over a denser clay subsoil, which dries fast and can set hard. The upper western slopes towards Highfields are red basalt Ferrosol. On steep ground water runs off before it soaks in, so lawns brown off first in a dry spell; deep, slow watering and the taller recommended cut help them hold on. Couch and kikuyu are the usual lawn grasses.
Ballard is a small rural locality on the eastern side of the range, about 7 km north-north-east of the Toowoomba CBD and right beside Highfields. It's in the Lockyer Valley council area and borders Highfields, Blue Mountain Heights, Mount Kynoch, Harlaxton, Mount Lofty, Withcott, Murphys Creek and Spring Bluff. It's steep country, with the land dropping from around 610 m to 370 m across the locality, and only about 65 homes at the 2021 Census. It's named after railway engineer Robert Ballard, and the heritage-listed Swansons Rail Bridge is here.
