Red Ferrosol (basalt) · slower-draining clay near the centre
Government soil mapping shows Kearneys Spring on deep to very deep red clay over basalt (the Ruthven and Middle Ridge Ferrosols), with a pocket of slower-draining, mottled clay mapped near the middle of the suburb. The red soil drains freely, but in summer the surface dries and can go water-repellent, so a wetting agent helps; the slower-draining clay can stay wet after heavy rain and is best not mown while soggy. Couch and kikuyu, the usual grasses here, are tough and wear-tolerant, which suits a busy backyard, and both slow down and brown off with frost in winter. Winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds, and clover moves into any lawn that's under-fed or worn thin.
Kearneys Spring is about 3.6 km south of the Toowoomba CBD via Ruthven Street, with the West Creek wetlands splitting the suburb into western and eastern parts. It was named after a family who ran a dairy farm here, and an early scheme of wooden pipes carried water from the springs to supply Toowoomba. It borders Harristown, Darling Heights, Middle Ridge, Centenary Heights, South Toowoomba, Top Camp and Preston, and is mostly suburban housing with a little grazing land in the south. It is growing: the 2021 Census counted 9,419 residents, up from 8,552 in 2016, and about 59% of homes are separate houses.
