Red Ferrosol (basalt)
Government soil mapping shows Darling Heights on deep to very deep red clay over basalt, mapped as the Ruthven and Middle Ridge soils of the Toowoomba plateau (Ferrosols). It drains freely and rarely waterlogs, but the surface can dry out and go water-repellent through summer, so a wetting agent and core aeration help keep water in the root zone. Couch and kikuyu are the usual grasses, with buffalo on shadier blocks, and all slow down and brown off with frost in winter. Winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds, clover moves into under-fed lawns, and rental lawns often need a reset when we first take them on.
Darling Heights is about 5 km south-south-west of the Toowoomba CBD, bordering Harristown, Drayton, Kearneys Spring, Finnie, Mount Rascal and Top Camp. It was named in 1966, when a new tertiary institute was planned here; it became the University of Southern Queensland in 1992, and this was its first campus. The suburb is also home to Ju Raku En, a 4.5-hectare Japanese stroll garden, and Darling Heights State School, which opened in 1980. At the 2021 Census it had 5,157 residents with a median age of 30, and 43.3% of homes were rented.
