Gowrie Junction

Gowrie Junction sits largely on black Vertosol — the heavy black cracking clay common across this region. It holds enormous amounts of water but drains slowly, compacts, and cracks when dry, so water pools in the wet then runs off the cracked surface in the dry. Aeration and coring are the key treatments here, opening the soil so moisture, air and nutrients penetrate deep instead of pooling on top. On the rises, red soil drains more freely. The fertile clay grows vigorous kikuyu and couch, along with QLD blue couch and buffalo — all of which need regular mowing to stay tidy.

The signature signs here are a lawn that cracks and won't take water in summer, and one that waterlogs in the wet — both mean the black soil needs aeration and coring to restore proper water movement.
