Government soil mapping shows Gowrie Junction on black cracking clay formed on basalt: shallow black clay through the centre, a redder cracking clay to the north-west, deep brownish-black cracking clay to the south-east, and very shallow dark clay over basalt around Gowrie township and to the north-east. Deep clay holds a lot of water but drains slowly, compacts and cracks when dry, so water pools in the wet then runs off in the dry; aeration and coring, with gypsum, open it up so moisture, air and nutrients get down. Where the clay is shallow over rock, lawns dry out first, so the taller recommended cut and deep, less frequent watering help. Toowoomba Airport, the nearest weather station, averages about 740 mm of rain a year. The fertile clay grows vigorous kikuyu and couch, along with Queensland blue couch and buffalo, all of which need regular mowing to stay tidy.
Gowrie Junction is a rural locality about 12 km north-west of the Toowoomba CBD, with the Western railway line and Gowrie railway station running through it and the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing passing across its southern part. The name comes from the Gowrie pastoral station, taken up in 1847, and the station here was the junction of the Southern and Western railway lines from 1871 to 1915. Gowrie State School has been open since 1878. At the 2021 census Gowrie Junction had 2,242 people in 759 dwellings, almost all of them separate houses.
