Black cracking clay (Vertosol) on basalt
Government soil mapping shows Kingsthorpe town and the country around it on deep, self-mulching black cracking clay (Vertosol) formed on basalt, with brownish-black cracking clay on the slopes and very shallow dark clay over basalt to the south-west. This clay holds plenty of water but takes it in slowly: it goes sticky when wet, then shrinks and cracks as it dries, and compacts under traffic. Core aeration is the treatment that matters, with gypsum on tight, compacted patches; wetting agents do little on clay this heavy. Couch, Queensland blue couch and kikuyu are the usual grasses, all warm-season types that slow down and colour off with frost over winter.
Kingsthorpe is a town about 21 km north-west of the Toowoomba CBD on the Western railway line, between Gowrie Junction and Oakey. It takes its name from the King brothers, pastoralists of the Gowrie property, and Kingsthorpe State School has been open since 1911. Mount Kingsthorpe Bushland Reserve, in the south-east of the locality, rises to about 600 m with views from the summit. The town has grown steadily, from 1,867 residents in 2016 to 2,159 in 2021, almost all in separate houses.
