Government soil mapping shows most of Charlton on black cracking clay (Vertosol) formed on basalt, shallow to moderately deep; the survey even has a soil unit named after Charlton, a moderately deep, self-mulching black cracking clay on basalt. Rises in the east and south-east carry very shallow soil over basalt, either stony red-brown loam or thin dark clay. The deeper clay holds water but takes it in slowly, cracking hard in the dry and bogging when wet, so core aeration matters most; the shallow, stony rises dry out first and want the taller recommended cut and deep, less frequent watering. Couch, Queensland blue couch and kikuyu are the usual grasses, slowing down and colouring off with frost over winter.
Charlton is a rural and industrial locality about 12 km west-north-west of the Toowoomba CBD, with a transport hub and industrial estate. The Warrego Highway and the Toowoomba Bypass both pass through it, and the Western railway line forms its northern boundary. The higher peak of Gowrie Mountain, 674 m, is in the far west of the locality. Only 107 people lived here at the 2021 Census, and the local school, opened in 1898 as Gowrie Estate Provisional School and later renamed Charlton State School, closed in 2013.
