The soil under your lawn

Black Vertosol (cracking clay)

Black Vertosol · texture-contrast on rises

Charlton is black cracking clay country, and the soil surveys back it up — the area has its own named soil unit, a moderately deep, alkaline black cracking clay, and the older CSIRO mapping records the same dark, heavy, neutral-to-alkaline clay across three separate associations here. That soil holds a lot of water but drains slowly: sticky in the wet, then cracking hard in the dry so water runs off the surface instead of soaking in. Aeration and coring are what keep moisture and air moving into the root zone. Lighter texture-contrast ground turns up on some of the rises, where wetting agents help instead. Couch, QLD blue couch and kikuyu are the common grasses, and khaki weed is worth watching on the lighter, drier patches.

Charlton is a western locality near the industrial and transport hub — a blend of rural-residential and industrial-adjacent properties.

What your lawn is telling you

Signs it needs more than a mow

The signature sign here is ground that cracks open and sheds water in the dry, then bogs up in the wet — that's the black clay, and aeration and coring restore proper water movement. Fast-drying patches on a lighter rise want a wetting agent instead. Spongy turf is thatch (scarify), and pale growth is hunger (feed).
