Government soil mapping shows Cranley mostly on very shallow to shallow dark cracking clay over basalt, with very dark grey heavy clay in the south-west and moderately deep red clay (Ferrosol) on the eastern side toward Harlaxton. The shallow clay holds little water above the rock, so lawns brown off first in a dry spell, and the taller recommended cut with deep, less frequent watering helps. The heavier clay compacts and cracks, and wants aeration and coring rather than wetting agents. Toowoomba Airport, the nearest weather station, averages about 740 mm of rain a year. Couch, Queensland blue couch and kikuyu are the common grasses; winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds, and khaki weed is worth watching on drier ground.
Cranley is about 6.9 km north-west of the Toowoomba CBD, with Gowrie Creek roughly following its northern and eastern boundaries and Boundary Road on the west. Most of the land is small farms and very low-density rural residential, while the south holds the Baillie Henderson Hospital, a wastewater treatment plant and the Palm Lake Resort retirement village. The population grew from 1,446 at the 2016 census to 2,281 in 2021, with a median age of 60. The name comes from the old Cranley railway station, which honoured local farmer and early Toowoomba councillor James Cranley.
