Red Ferrosol (basalt)
Government soil mapping shows red Ferrosol across Cawdor: deep, dark reddish-brown clay loam to red clay on basalt. It's good lawn soil that drains freely, but the surface can dry hard and shed water in summer, so a wetting agent helps on patches that won't soak up a sprinkler. On acreage the bigger challenge is usually keeping long grass, fence lines and paddock edges under control. Couch, kikuyu and buffalo are the usual lawn grasses; warm-season grass goes dormant after winter frosts and greens up in spring.
Cawdor is a small rural-residential locality about 4.5 km south-west of Highfields and 14 km north of the Toowoomba CBD, home to around 420 people at the 2021 Census. It takes its name from its old railway station, named after the castle in Shakespeare's Macbeth, and it borders Highfields, Meringandan West, Gowrie Junction, Birnam, Glencoe and Woolmer. It sits a little lower than Highfields, at roughly 570 to 590 m.
