The soil under your lawn

Red Ferrosol (free-draining)

Red Ferrosol · black clay in low spots · shallow rocky basalt on scarps

Cawdor sits on the elevated red Ferrosol at the Highfields plateau edge, with black clay pockets in the low areas and — as the soil survey's own Cawdor unit records — dark, shallow, rocky basalt soils on the steeper slopes and scarps. The red soil drains freely and dries at the surface in summer (wetting agents help); the black pockets compact and crack (aeration helps); and the shallow rocky ground browns off first in a dry spell, where deep, less frequent watering beats sprinkling. The altitude suits kikuyu, buffalo and couch. Warm-season grasses go dormant with the winter frosts and green up in spring.

Cawdor is an elevated northern rural-residential locality near Highfields — larger blocks and acreage, cooler with frosts.

What your lawn is telling you

Signs it needs more than a mow

Dormant grass after frost is normal. Beading dry patches want a wetting agent, hard cracked ground in a low pocket wants aeration, spongy turf wants a scarify, and pale growth wants feeding.

  • Do you do acreage up here? Yes — the commercial-grade zero-turn is built for it.
  • Is my frost-affected lawn dying? No — warm-season grass goes dormant in winter and greens up in spring.
