Government soil mapping shows Drayton is a real mix. The north-east, towards Harristown, is deep red clay on basalt (Ferrosol) and Mount Peel carries stony red clay, while the centre is mapped as very shallow dark clay over basalt and the south and west as deep black cracking clay on basalt slope wash. The red soil drains freely and can go water-repellent in summer, so a wetting agent helps there. The very shallow ground dries fast and browns off first, so hold the taller recommended cut and water deeply but less often. The black clay compacts and cracks as it dries; core aeration and gypsum help, and wetting agents do little on it. Couch and kikuyu are the usual grasses, with buffalo on some blocks, and all brown off with frost in winter.
Drayton is about 6 km south-west of the Toowoomba CBD, bordering Glenvale, Harristown, Westbrook, Darling Heights and Finnie, with the South Western railway line along its south-western edge and Mount Peel (711 m) in the north-west. It was settled in 1842 and known as The Springs at first; the population centre shifted to Toowoomba in the 1860s. Heritage-listed places include the Royal Bull's Head Inn, St Matthew's Anglican Church and Drayton State School, which opened in 1851 and is one of Queensland's oldest state primary schools. Housing runs from 19th-century cottages to 1990s and 2000s homes and units, many aimed at University of Southern Queensland students, and the 2021 Census counted 1,813 residents.
