Red Ferrosol (basalt) · black cracking clay towards the south-west
Government soil mapping shows most of Harristown on very deep, dark reddish-brown clay loam over red clay, a basalt Ferrosol with plenty of nodular laterite, with moderately deep black cracking clay mapped towards the south-west near Drayton. The red soil drains freely, but its surface can go water-repellent in a dry summer, so a wetting agent helps; the black clay holds water, then shrinks and cracks as it dries, and wants core aeration rather than a wetting agent. The long-running Toowoomba weather station (closed 2007), the nearest long-term record, averaged about 950 mm of rain a year and a July mean minimum of 5.3 °C, so couch and kikuyu slow down and brown off with frost in winter. Couch and kikuyu are the usual grasses, with buffalo on some blocks. Neglected rental lawns usually need a reset first: a cut back, weed spray and feed.
Harristown is about 4.4 km south-west of the Toowoomba CBD and borders Glenvale, Newtown, the city centre, South Toowoomba, Drayton, Darling Heights and Kearneys Spring. It began as the Harristown Estate in 1902, named after Brisbane businessman George Harris, and grew quickly after the Second World War. It is home to Harristown State School and State High School, St Anthony's School and Concordia Lutheran College, along with heritage-listed Smithfield House and the Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery. At the 2021 Census it had 9,081 residents and 4,255 dwellings, with 39.5% of homes rented.
