Mount Kynoch

Mount Kynoch sits on the elevated red Ferrosol, with black clay pockets in the low areas. The soil survey maps a Kynoch unit here — deep, neutral red clay over basalt — and the Drayton–Kynoch association runs neutral to alkaline in the subsoil rather than acid like the plateau soils further south, so it doesn't carry the same lime questions. The red soil drains freely and dries at the surface in summer (wetting agents help); the black pockets compact and crack (aeration helps). The altitude suits kikuyu, which holds colour into the cool, along with buffalo for frost tolerance and couch on the open blocks. Warm-season grasses go dormant with the winter frosts and green up in spring.

Mount Kynoch is an elevated northern locality at the top of the range near the city's northern edge — larger and semi-rural blocks, cooler than the city with frosts.

Dormant golden grass after a frost is normal and recovers in spring. Beading dry patches want a wetting agent, hard cracked ground in a low pocket wants aeration, spongy turf wants a scarify, and pale growth wants feeding.
