Mount Kynoch is changing fast: the Habitat Mt Kynoch estate is adding a lot of smaller, often sloping new yards alongside the older blocks. Small sloping yards need push mowers and careful whipper snipping around retaining walls and batters rather than a big machine, and the bigger blocks get the zero-turn.

Red Ferrosol (basalt)
Government soil mapping shows red Ferrosol here: deep, dark reddish-brown clay loam to light clay on basalt, the same soil family as the Toowoomba plateau. It drains well but dries hard at the surface in summer, so a wetting agent helps where water beads off. New estate lawns are often laid on cut-and-fill and compacted building ground, so aeration and regular feeding help them establish. Couch, kikuyu and buffalo are the usual lawn grasses; warm-season grass goes dormant after frosts and greens up in spring.
Mount Kynoch is about 6 km north of the Toowoomba CBD, with the Great Dividing Range running through its east and a 709 m peak. It's named after John Kynoch, an early Highfields Shire chairman. The New England Highway and the Toowoomba Bypass run through it, and the city's Mt Kynoch Water Treatment Plant sits on the summit beside Mount Kynoch Park. The Habitat Mt Kynoch master-planned estate, with more than 800 lots planned, is bringing a lot of new homes and new lawns.
