Red Ferrosol (basalt) · black cracking clay at the fringes
Government soil mapping shows most of Wilsonton on very deep, dark reddish-brown clay loam over red clay, a basalt Ferrosol with plenty of nodular laterite, grading to a moderately deep red-brown Ferrosol towards the north. Black cracking clay is mapped at the northern and western fringes. The red soil drains freely and rarely waterlogs, but its surface can go water-repellent in a hot, dry spell and older lawns compact under foot traffic, so a wetting agent and core aeration both help. The Bureau of Meteorology's Toowoomba Airport station, at the aerodrome, has averaged about 740 mm of rain a year since 1996, with July nights averaging 6.7 °C. Couch and kikuyu are the usual grasses, with some buffalo, and all of them slow right down and can brown off after frost in winter.
Wilsonton is about 6 km by road north-west of the Toowoomba CBD, with Toowoomba City Aerodrome in the middle of the suburb and a small industrial area in the south-west corner around Taylor and Boundary streets. It borders Cotswold Hills, Cranley, Wilsonton Heights, Torrington, Rockville, Glenvale and Newtown. The suburb dates from the 1880s, and Wilsonton State School opened on Bridge Street in 1894; Fairview Heights State School and Sacred Heart Primary School are also here. At the 2021 Census Wilsonton had 5,891 residents and about 2,860 dwellings, roughly three-quarters of them separate houses.
