Red Ferrosol on basalt · small black cracking clay pocket in the north-east
Government soil mapping shows most of Rockville on the Ruthven–Middle Ridge association: very deep, dark reddish-brown clay loams over red clay subsoils, a free-draining red Ferrosol on basalt. A small area at the north-eastern edge is mapped as Waco black cracking clay (Vertosol), a very deep, self-mulching heavy clay. On the red soil the surface dries and can turn water-repellent in summer, so a wetting agent and aeration help; on the black clay the ground holds water, then shrinks, cracks and compacts as it dries, so core aeration and gypsum do more than a wetting agent will. Couch and kikuyu are the common grasses, with buffalo on shadier blocks; couch and kikuyu slow and colour off after winter frosts. Winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds, and clover shows up on under-fed lawns.
Rockville is about 3.5 km north-west of the Toowoomba CBD, with Cranley to the north, Harlaxton to the east, Newtown and North Toowoomba to the south and Wilsonton and Wilsonton Heights to the west. It takes its name from the Rockville Estate, named after Rockville House, and was officially named in 1981. Rockville State School has been on Holberton Street since 1922, St Andrews Toowoomba Hospital is on North Street, and the eastern edge is an industrial area that includes the Leslie Research Centre. Black Gully Reserve is one of several local parks.
