Red Ferrosol (basalt) · darker brown clay on the western side
Government soil mapping shows most of Harlaxton on deep to very deep red Ferrosol formed on basalt, the Ruthven soil of the Toowoomba plateau, with darker brown clay over a mottled subsoil on the western side and very shallow dark clay over basalt mapped just to the north toward Mount Kynoch. The red soil drains freely, so through summer heat the surface dries out and can turn water-repellent, leaving patches where water beads and runs off; a wetting agent and aeration fix that, and deep soaking beats frequent light sprinkling every time. The heavier western ground can stay wet after rain, so aeration helps there too. Couch and kikuyu are the usual lawn grasses, with buffalo on shadier blocks. Winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds to stay ahead of, and clover turns up on any lawn that's gone hungry.
Harlaxton is about 4 km north of the Toowoomba city centre, with the New England Highway running up Ruthven Street. Once rural, it's now mostly residential, alongside quarries and the Willowburn railway marshalling yard off Davidson Street. The suburb is named after Harlaxton House, built in 1869 and home to explorer Francis Thomas Gregory, and later Lord Lamington's summer residence while he was Governor; the lamington is widely believed to have been created there. Harlaxton State School has been open since 1901 and Downlands College since 1931. At the 2021 census Harlaxton had 2,824 people with a median age of 31, and 47% of homes were rented.
