The soil under your lawn

Black Vertosol (cracking clay)

Black Vertosol · texture-contrast in patches

Torrington sits on the western flats, in the same black-soil belt the survey maps around Charlton and Kingsthorpe — heavy black cracking clay across much of the ground, with lighter texture-contrast soil in patches. The black clay holds a lot of water but drains slowly, going sticky in the wet and cracking hard in the dry, so aeration and coring are the fix; the lighter patches dry fast, where wetting agents help instead. Couch, QLD blue couch and kikuyu are the common grasses. Khaki weed is worth watching on the drier, lighter ground, and winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds.

Torrington is a western suburb mixing established residential streets with nearby industrial areas, giving it a range from compact home lawns to larger commercial-adjacent blocks. We handle residential maintenance and commercial grounds work here alike.

What your lawn is telling you

Signs it needs more than a mow

Cracked, water-shedding ground that bogs up in the wet is the black clay — aeration and coring restore proper water movement. Fast-drying patches on lighter ground want wetting agents instead. Spongy turf is thatch (scarify), and pale growth is hunger (feed). Prickly spreading patches could be khaki weed — worth treating early.

What we do here

Common questions

Local lawn questions

  • Do you do commercial or industrial-block grounds? Yes — commercial grounds maintenance is a core service.
  • My lawn cracks and sheds water — what helps? That's the black clay setting hard as it dries. Aeration and coring open it up so water penetrates deep.
  • One-off or ongoing? Both.
