Government soil mapping shows Torrington on black cracking clay (Vertosol) formed on basalt: moderately deep, neutral to alkaline black alluvial clay over basalt stones through the centre and east, a redder version of the Charlton clay in the north-west, and brownish-black cracking clay in the south. The clay holds a lot of water but drains slowly, going sticky in the wet and cracking hard in the dry, so core aeration is the fix, with gypsum on compacted patches; wetting agents do little on clay this heavy. Toowoomba Airport, the nearest weather station, averages about 740 mm of rain a year. Couch, Queensland blue couch and kikuyu are the usual grasses, slowing down and colouring off through winter.
Torrington is a small locality on the western edge of Toowoomba, about 6.4 km west-north-west of the city centre and just off the Warrego Highway. A significant industrial area serving the region runs along its eastern boundary on Boundary Road, and the rest is mostly homes: the 2021 Census counted 1,070 residents in 394 dwellings, almost all separate houses, up from 879 people in 2016. Torrington was part of the Shire of Jondaryan until the 2008 amalgamation that created the Toowoomba Region.
