Government soil mapping shows Middle Ridge's plateau side on deep to very deep red clay over basalt, the Ruthven soil, with the closely related Middle Ridge soil, which shares the suburb's name, mapped alongside it; the steep eastern slopes are mapped as basalt country too. These red Ferrosols are deep and free-draining, which suits lawns and gardens, but the surface dries out in summer heat and can go water-repellent, so a wetting agent on stubborn dry patches and core aeration keep water getting in. Check pH with a soil test before adding lime rather than guessing. Couch and kikuyu suit open lawns, with buffalo on shadier blocks, and all brown off and slow down with winter frost. Winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds.
Middle Ridge is about 6 km south-south-east of the Toowoomba CBD, between East Creek and West Creek, bordering Kearneys Spring, Centenary Heights, Rangeville, Silver Ridge, Preston and Upper Flagstone. The Great Dividing Range runs through the suburb, so the residential western side sits at about 660 to 670 m on the range-top plateau while the eastern side drops steeply to about 420 m. The name dates from the 1860s, when teamsters grazed their teams between the two creeks, and Middle Ridge had its own shire council from 1880 to 1917. It is home to Middle Ridge State School (opened 1884), the Toowoomba Golf Club and heritage-listed Gabbinbar Homestead. At the 2021 Census it had 7,595 residents, and 93% of homes were separate houses.
