Government soil mapping shows Cabarlah on deep to very deep red Ferrosol formed on basalt right across the locality, the Ruthven and Ravensbourne soils of the Toowoomba plateau; no black clay showed up at the points checked. The red soil drains freely and dries at the surface in summer, and on slopes it can turn water-repellent, so a wetting agent and aeration help water soak in. Kikuyu holds its colour through the cool and buffalo handles frost well; couch and TifTuf suit the sunnier, open blocks. In winter, warm-season grasses go dormant with the frosts, which is normal, not dead, and they green up again in spring.

Cabarlah sits on the Great Dividing Range about 15 km north of the Toowoomba city centre, next to Highfields on the New England Highway, with views east over the Lockyer Valley and west across the plains beyond Toowoomba. Farming was the traditional land use, but acreage and residential development has spread in recent years; at the 2021 census Cabarlah had 1,307 people in 432 dwellings, all of them separate houses. The area was known as Five-Mile Camp until the railway came through in 1883. It is home to Borneo Barracks and the Army's 7th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare), along with the Cabarlah Golf Club and the Black Forest Hill Clock Centre.
