Red Ferrosol (basalt)
Government soil mapping shows red Ferrosol here: moderately deep to deep red, non-cracking clay over basalt. It drains freely, but the surface dries hard in summer heat and can shed water, so a wetting agent helps on dry patches. On sloping and terraced escarpment-edge yards, water runs off before it soaks in, so deep, slow watering does more than a quick sprinkle. Couch, kikuyu and buffalo are the usual lawn grasses; warm-season grass goes dormant after frosts and greens up in spring.
Blue Mountain Heights is a small locality about 7 km north of the Toowoomba CBD, on the New England Highway between Mount Kynoch and Highfields. At roughly 700 m it's one of the higher spots on our northern round, and it borders Highfields, Ballard, Birnam and Mount Kynoch. Around 990 people lived here at the 2021 Census, almost all in separate houses, and a large site off Vayro Road is zoned for new low-density housing.
