Government soil mapping shows Gowrie Mountain on dark cracking clay formed on basalt: very shallow dark clay over rock on the mountain slopes, shallow black cracking clay on the lower ground, and deep, self-mulching dark clay on basaltic alluvium on the flats in the south-west. No red or sandy soils showed up at the points checked. Shallow ground dries out and browns off first in a dry spell, so the taller recommended cut and deep, less frequent watering help; the deep clay instead compacts and cracks and wants aeration, and wetting agents do little on either. Couch, Queensland blue couch and kikuyu are the common grasses. Winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds, and khaki weed is worth watching on the drier slopes.
Gowrie Mountain is a small rural locality about 15.7 km west-north-west of the Toowoomba CBD, with the Warrego Highway along its northern boundary and Dry Creek along its southern one. It takes its name from the mountain: the lower peak (630 m) is in the far east of the locality, and the higher peak (674 m) is over the line in Charlton. A school ran here from 1901 to 1967. The locality had 222 people at the 2021 census.
