Government soil mapping shows most of Meringandan on black cracking clay (Vertosol) formed on basalt, with dark cracking clay on alluvium along the creek line and sandy loams over clay (Sodosol) on the sandstone rises in the north. The black clay holds a lot of water but drains slowly, goes sticky in the wet, then sets hard and cracks open in the dry so water runs off instead of soaking in: aeration and coring fix that, and gypsum helps the structure. The sandier rises have a hardsetting surface that resists water even when you apply it, the classic case for a wetting agent backed by aeration to break the crust. Meringandan is a small rural locality about 19 km north-north-west of Toowoomba and 4.8 km north-west of Highfields, with Meringandan Creek forming most of its boundary with Meringandan West. It had 530 people in 178 dwellings at the 2021 census, up from 305 people in 2011. The name is said to come from the Aboriginal words moorin (fire) and gandan (clay), meaning place of fire and clay. Once part of the Gowrie pastoral station, the district opened to closer settlement in the 1870s, when many German families arrived, and the first train on the Toowoomba to Cabarlah line came through in 1883.
