Government soil mapping shows Meringandan West on black cracking clay formed on basalt: shallow, coarse black clay through the centre, very shallow dark clay over basalt on the rises toward Mount Muniganeen, and deep black cracking clay in the south. Deep black clay holds plenty of water but drains slowly, turns sticky in the wet and cracks hard in the dry, so aeration and coring, with gypsum, keep water moving into the root zone. Where the clay is shallow over rock, the root zone dries out fast in a hot spell, so the taller recommended cut and deep, less frequent watering help. Couch and Queensland blue couch do best, with kikuyu for hardiness. Winter grass and bindii are the cool-season weeds, khaki weed is worth watching in summer, and warm-season grass goes dormant after frost.
Meringandan West is about 22.8 km north-north-west of the Toowoomba CBD, with Meringandan Creek forming most of its eastern boundary with Meringandan and Mount Muniganeen (613 m) in the north-west. Its central parts have been developed into a residential estate, and the population grew from 2,211 at the 2016 census to 2,488 in 2021, across 821 dwellings that are almost all separate houses. Meringandan State School on School Road has been open since 1876, and the Meringandan Cemetery was surveyed the same year.
