Meringandan West

Like Meringandan, this is two-soil country. The soil survey maps black cracking clay and dark shallow basalt soils across much of the district — that black ground holds plenty of water but drains slowly, turns sticky in the wet and cracks hard in the dry, so aeration and coring are what keep moisture moving into the root zone. The lighter, light-brown texture-contrast soil on the rises has low water retention and a hardsetting surface that's quick to dry, where wetting agents earn their place. On the bigger blocks you'll often have both. Drought-tolerant couch and QLD blue couch do best, with kikuyu for hardiness; buffalo needs extra help on the lighter ground. Khaki weed is a real risk on the light, warm soil.

Meringandan West is the rural-residential western side of the Meringandan area, sharing a boundary along Meringandan Creek — larger blocks and acreage northwest of Highfields, with soil that often varies across a single property.

Cracked, water-shedding ground that bogs up in the wet is the black clay, and it wants aeration and coring. Fast browning and water that won't soak in is the lighter soil, and it wants wetting agents. On a big block you may well see both in different spots. Prickly spreading patches could be khaki weed — treat it early. Pale growth wants feeding.
