Red Ferrosol (basalt)
Government soil mapping shows Hampton on deep to very deep red Ferrosol formed on basalt, the same structured red clay found on the Toowoomba plateau. It's fertile, well-structured soil that drains freely, so the surface can dry out in summer heat and, on slopes, turn water-repellent, leaving patches where water beads and runs off; a wetting agent and aeration fix that. Kikuyu holds its colour into the cool months and buffalo handles frost well, with couch on the sunnier blocks. Winter frosts send warm-season grass golden and dormant: normal, not dead, and it greens up again in spring.
Hampton is a small rural town north of Toowoomba, about 31.6 km north-north-east of the Toowoomba CBD and 12 km south of Crows Nest, at the top of an escarpment on the Great Dividing Range. The New England Highway runs through it, and the Esk–Hampton Road heads east toward Ravensbourne National Park. Farms around the district grow citrus and avocados, and Cooby, Perseverance and Cressbrook dams are all nearby. The town is named after its old railway station on the Crows Nest line, which reached Hampton in 1886, and 469 people lived in the locality at the 2021 census.
