Hampton

Hampton sits on elevated northern basalt range country — fertile red and basalt-derived soils, the same rich ground that supports the area's commercial avocado orchards and berry farms (and avocados only thrive on free-draining soil, which tells you plenty about the ground up here), free-draining on the higher slopes. It's genuinely cold up here with real, regular frosts through winter, and the free-draining soil dries at the surface in summer heat (wetting agents help). The altitude suits kikuyu, which holds colour into the cool, and buffalo for its frost tolerance, with couch on the sunnier blocks. Warm-season grasses go firmly dormant through the frosty winter and green up in spring.

Hampton is a high-country village on the New England Highway in the northern range, between Geham and Pechey — rural and lifestyle blocks in the region's fertile high-country produce area (known for avocados, berries and vegetables), cool with real frosts.
